A practical guide to Nim

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Nim. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Practice with a purpose

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Refer to the controls when needed.

What counts as success

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

From the start of a round

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

See the idea in action

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
